Later this month, both the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery and Mary Boone Gallery in New York City will feature the latest solo exhibition from celebrated Cuban-American artist José Parlá. Entitled “Surface Body / Action Space,” the display will feature all-new paintings and sculptures from Parlá in his signature style — heavy textures and thick applications of paint form layered substructures that convey “weight, volume and permanence, while veils of color, rapid calligraphic marks and remnants of text form a palimpsest-like surface suggesting the ephemeral: memory, the traces of lives and time. Like fragments of city walls, the works evoke societies in upheaval and solemnize the distinctly human impulse to leave a record of our presence.”
“Surface Body / Action Space” opens September 12 and will remain open through the entire month of October.
